Illiteracy costs you billions of dollars annually for lost revenue, welfare, unemployment, insurance and crime. 70% of the unemployed have reading problems and 85% of the incarcerated have turned to crime as a means of survival due to the inability to read and thereby were not in a position to hold adequate employment. Additionally, one third of children in the 3rd grade are unable to read at this level, and if left un-addressed will fall further behind potentially becoming our future adult illiterates who will not be able to make a contribution back to society. Instead they will be a burden to us. It has been proven that children who come from families incapable of reading, the likelihood is those children will mirror the same deficiency. In most states an illiterate individual is permitted to have a drivers license putting others at risk on the road. Illiteracy affects all genders, races ages and socioeconomic groups. Statistically one out of every four individuals is illiterate. Illiteracy is everyone's responsibility.
